8.5”x8.5” Hand bound, 29 pg. plus a 3m20s video of paired illustrations with Wait’s original work.
Written and performed by Tom Waits (Mule Variations 1999, Epitaph/Anti Records), the song combines various bangs, creaks and groans with words. Waits immerses the listener in a dark, and emotional world where the narrator voyeuristically monitors his neighbor, imagining the worst about his actions. I sought to recreate this experience visually through illustration and design, using traditional photographic techniques combined with hand built scale models. I did not use digital editing, attempting to portray the emotion of the story faithfully. Included in the final book is the documentation of my process—central to the way I interpreted the narrative.
