Ninety-six percent of the women in Canada’s Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) are from the Philippines. Working as nannies and caregivers, they are treated like second-class citizens by the government, their employers and society at large. In a country that prefers to invest in disposable labour rather than people, knowledge is power. These women have the right to be informed, to access resources, to be mothers, to spoil themselves. Inspired by traditional Philippine textiles, Social Weavers responds to the needs of migrant Filipinas, while acknowledging their role in weaving ties between country, community, family and self.
