My work deals with themes of identity, belonging, homesickness, travel, and dislocation - of being out of place or between cultures. It represents a kind of spirit of the times - the flow of moving around the globe. We are the generation who graduated from college in our small towns, and were given the option of working in call centres or going overseas to teach English. The generation of people who moved to Canada as children, or came from Asia to study English in downtown Vancouver. The generation for whom, regardless of origin, the possibility of global travel as a lifestyle choice is far more real, and far more commonplace than it has been for any generation in the past.
