20” x 20” Color Photographs with Embroidery
We consider the photograph as an heirloom, something precious, as well as a reproducible and disposable item. Therefore, I approach the photograph as an object and tactile surface and introduce unfamiliar materials and processes such as embroidery to its plane. The repetitive action of the needle puncturing the surface offers a meditative and comforting experience that directly references “women’s work,” which is often practiced during the waiting period of war. Stitch work connects me with an epidemic of women also experiencing the Iraq war with a loved one directly involved. The local landscape imposed with the image of soldiers brings the conflict close to home.
