Bromoil print: fibre based black and white print, 16˝× 20˝
A couple years ago I was blessed with a gift. I discovered a photo album belonging to my grandmother Albina Rafalska, a first-generation American, the daughter of Polish immigrants who escaped their country just before the fall of the last Russian czar. I immediately felt captivated by these images from another time, another place. I wanted to know more about these individuals and asked my grandfather, but he could only name a few. They were once people important to her: friends, former lovers or extended family. This series aesthetic starts from the images but eventually becomes distant from the individual’s specific characteristics.
